“Come Back Home!”

Well, we have to come home now because Guy Garvey said so.

Let me explain …. so, the reason this blog is called Finger Rolls and Folding Chairs is because of the Elbow song “Open Arms.” which is all about a wanderer being asked to ‘come back home’ by his friends and family:

So with finger rolls and folding chairs
And a volley of streamers
We can be there for tweaks and repairs
Should you come back home

We got open arms for broken hearts
Like yours my boy, come home again

More about the song here.

The first time I heard that song, on Elbow’s sublime 5th album, I felt like it had been written just for me. We had just made the decision to actually move home and I was filled with nervous excitement. Was I doing the right thing? Would we come to regret it? What about all the rain back home? What if we couldn’t settle? But that story, of a community rallying around the long-lost traveler, reminded me of the reason behind all the upheaval. We had made the decision because we knew that friends and family are what count most in life, and because we missed ours. We needed to ‘come back home.’

So can you imagine how excited we were to get this message from Guy Garvey, lead singer of Elbow?

Let me stress that the man who just said my name, is also the man who writes and sings like this:

So that’s that. We have to start packing now because Guy said so 🙂

  1. Nice! I think you should just leave tomorrow and have someone else send your things along. The video/song you posted is beautiful.

    • Well you know we’ll all be here waiting for you. Not just with finger rolls and folding chairs but with open arms holding pints of Build A Rocket Boys! So glad you are no longer an Elbow virgin and now know first hand their power live. Can’t wait to see you soon. Love Dave & Deb
